The Democracy and AI (opens in new tab) project addresses this tension by developing a framework to assess both democratic risks and opportunities associated with generative artificial intelligence, which is reshaping political communication and governance despite limited systematic evidence on its implications for democratic systems. While AI can improve access to information, participation, transparency, and accountability, it also poses risks, including disinformation, algorithmic bias, and electoral manipulation.

The project brings together a multidisciplinary network from six Una Europa institutions, integrating political science, communication studies, and computer science. It examines how AI affects democratic values, electoral integrity, and governance, based on structured engagement with societal stakeholders. Core activities include interdisciplinary research workshops, a seminar series, and a virtual training programme on AI for research. By developing analytical tools and conceptual frameworks, the project seeks to advance research on democracy and contribute to safeguarding democratic resilience in the context of AI-driven political change.
